What Is Mammography?

Mammography uses a low-dose X-ray machine to take images of the breasts and breast tissue, which can help radiologists detect and identify any abnormal growths or changes. These images help doctors diagnose breast cancer, cysts, and other possible conditions. Mammography is the most effective tool for diagnosing breast cancer in the early stages, when it is easier to treat.

At UConn Health’s Beekley Imaging Center, we offer the latest technologies to detect cancer, including all-digital 3D mammography and a computer-aided detection system. Our radiology and gynecology experts work together to give you the most accurate results. You can even get live reads and same-day results upon request.

The age to start screening for breast cancer depends on your individual risk factors. Talk to your doctor to evaluate your breast cancer risk and decide when you should begin getting mammograms.

What to Expect

  • Before Your Exam

    • Typically, a mammogram will take approximately 20 minutes.
    • Don’t use deodorant, lotion, perfume, or powder on the day of your exam.
    • Wear a two-piece outfit because you will be asked to remove clothing and jewelry from the waist up.
    • Your mammogram results will be available within 24-72 hours.
    • Please do not bring children under age 12 to your appointment.

  • During Your Exam

    For the procedure, you will be asked to stand in front of an X-ray machine specifically designed for mammography.

    Your breast is gradually pressed against the platform by a clear plastic plate. Pressure is applied for a few seconds to spread the breast tissue. The pressure isn’t harmful, but you may find it uncomfortable or even painful. You’ll also be asked to stand still and hold your breath. If you experience too much discomfort, tell the technologist.

    The mammogram machine will be repositioned several times during your exam. You can expect your appointment to last about 20 minutes from start to finish.

  • After Your Exam

    Your mammogram results will be available within 24-72 hours. Your ordering physician may contact you with the results. If you do not receive results from your physician, please call us at 860-480-1981.

    A radiologist may request additional imaging, such as an ultrasound, to get a closer look at a specific area of the breast. This is most often done to clarify overlying normal breast tissue or to better visualize calcified areas. If further study is needed, you will receive a letter in the mail.

Early detection is the best defense against breast cancer. 3D mammography, or tomosynthesis, provides doctors with a clearer, more detailed view of breast tissue and can lead to earlier, easier detection of breast cancer. The state-of-the-art technology captures breast images from multiple angles and helps radiologists detect abnormalities that traditional mammograms miss.

Monday through Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday: 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.
