Calf Muscle Tear

What Is a Calf Muscle Tear?

Calf muscle tears occur when the muscles of the calf are stretched beyond their ability to withstand tension. Small micro-tears or a more severe, complete rupture may occur.

Calf muscle tears most often occur during acceleration or changes in direction.

Symptoms

If you experience a torn calf muscle, symptoms might include:

  • Feeling of tightness or weakness in the calf
  • Sharp pain or weakness
  • Throbbing pain while at rest
  • Spasms
  • Popping sound if a complete rupture occurs
